Cornell History: Meet the mastadon
June 09, 1871
Professors have examined fossilized mastodon teeth found in Mottsville, N.Y., the Cornell Era reports. Two men digging a ditch had found the large tooth and two fragments, which were brought to the university. Ezra Cornell and A.D. White saw the specimens and proposed several professors visit the site. The professors found several small bones and a tooth fragment, and later three more teeth and bone fragments were discovered. The fossils were added to the university’s museum of contemporary anatomy.
