Cornell History: McGraw Tower pumpkin
October 08, 1997
A hollowed-out pumpkin appears atop McGraw Tower’s spire. The prank attracted international attention for months. For safety reasons Provost Don Randel was scheduled to retrieve it via crane in March 1998, but workmen testing the equipment accidentally knocked it down. The university tried to preserve the pumpkin, but it eventually rotted. The mystery of how the pumpkin made it to the spire remains unsolved.
