A Mannifestly better second floor

Mann Library has upped its game.

After considerable input from students, the second floor now has new furniture with built-in USB and electrical outlets, adjustable-height tables, standing work tables and new seats in a range of colors, shapes and sizes.

Individual study nook spaces and privacy sound-blocking screens will facilitate solo study. New features for collaborative study include additional whiteboards and mobile furniture and LCDs. Additional improvements – such as video recording and interview studios – are also in the works.

All the new furniture is positioned to take advantage of natural light and offer optimal views of the Beebe Lake woods.

Mann staff members collected extensive feedback and assessment from students through participating in ethnographic studies and simple surveys, drawing ideal library spaces, taking photo diaries and rating demo pieces of furniture.

“We really listened to what students needed and responded accordingly,” said Mary Ochs, Mann’s director.

Funding for the furniture came from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the College of Human Ecology and donations to Mann.
