Northeast records its eighth coldest November since 1895

The Northeast shivered its way through the eighth coldest November for the region in 102 years of record, according to climatologists from the Northeast Regional Climate Center at Cornell University.

The average temperature for the 12-state region was 34.6 degrees -- 4.7 degrees colder than normal. The record is 32.8 degrees, set in 1901.

Delaware and Maryland each averaged about 6 degrees colder than normal for each state's fourth coldest November on record. The normal average temperature for Delaware is 47.1 and Maryland is 45.8 degrees. The region's smallest temperature departure was in Maine, where temperatures averaged 2.2 degrees below normal.

Precipitation for the month was slightly below normal -- the Northeast received 93 percent of its normal precipitation during November, as recorded by 450 stations throughout the 12-state region. The wettest state was New York with 124 percent of normal. Maine and Rhode Island, meanwhile, only received about half of their monthly normal precipitation.

Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia all reported their wettest January-November period on record. It was also a record for the 12 states combined, as the area-weighted total of 48.82 inches was more than 10 inches over normal.

With a month remaining in the year, the area-weighted state average for West Virginia of 55.15 inches already exceeds the calendar year record of 54.41 inches set in 1972. The Northeast needs just 2.52 inches of precipitation in December to break a record, while Pennsylvania needs only 1.85 inches and New York, 4.29 inches.
