Trustees and Council members gather at Cornell Oct. 16-18

Members of the Cornell Board of Trustees and University Council will arrive on campus Thursday, Oct. 16, for Cornell's annual Trustee/Council Weekend.

The annual meeting of the 440-member council and a quarterly meeting of the trustees are scheduled on campus every fall so that the groups may attend joint meetings and hear President Hunter Rawlings' State of the University Address.

The council is an advisory body made up of alumni and friends of the university who are elected by the trustees.

Rawlings' speech, which is open only to trustees, council members and their spouses, will be delivered Friday, Oct. 17, at 9 a.m. in the Alice Statler Auditorium, Statler Hall.

The Board of Trustees will meet Saturday morning at 9 a.m. in the Trustee Meeting Room of the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art. The open portion of the meeting will include a report from Rawlings, a report from Provost Don M. Randel on the university's 1998-99 state budget request for the state-supported schools and colleges, a report on enrollment trends and a financial report on fiscal year 1996-97. A limited number of tickets for the full board's open session will be available starting at 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Information and Referral desk in the lobby of Day Hall. No tickets are needed for the open sessions of the committees.

Several committees will have open sessions Thursday:

  • The Committee on Land Grant and Statutory College Affairs' meeting -- from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. in the Pennsylvania Room of the Statler Hotel -- will be open for discussion on a range of program and financial matters affecting Cornell's state-assisted colleges.
  • The Buildings and Properties Committee, meeting from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in the Statler Hotel's Yale-Princeton Room, will be open for the first 20 minutes to hear status reports on ongoing projects.

On Thursday evening, council members and trustees will attend a reception from 8 to 10 p.m. to celebrate the formation of a universitywide Department of Statistical Science. The department was established July 1, 1997.

The Committee on Academic Affairs and Campus Life will meet Friday, from 2:45 to 4:45 p.m., in the Yale-Princeton Room. The meeting will be open for the first 10 minutes for an overview of the year and again for 15 minutes at 3:15 for a discussion of curriculum review in the College of Human Ecology.

After Rawlings' speech, at 10:30 Friday morning, a presentation will be made on "Ezra's Vision of 'Any Person, Any Study' and the Future of Undergraduate Financial Aid at Cornell."

On Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, council members can choose from a series of seminars offered by Cornell faculty on a variety of subjects. The seminars range from "Cornell in the Amazon Rainforest: Bioprospecting for Modern Medicine" to "The Evolving Role of Women in Athletics."

At 5:15 Friday afternoon trustees and council members will help launch the 25th anniversary celebration of the Johnson Museum. On Saturday afternoon, trustees and council members will attend the Big Red vs. Lafayette football game at Schoellkopf Field.
