College president and former Peace Corps leader Mark Gearan to give Cornell Commitment Convocation keynote address

Mark Gearan, president of Hobart and William Smith Colleges, will deliver the keynote address, "Civic Engagement in the 21st Century," for the 2006 Cornell Commitment Convocation, Friday, March 3, at 6:30 p.m. in Call Alumni Auditorium in Kennedy Hall. Gearan was previously director of the Peace Corps and former President Bill Clinton's deputy chief of staff.

The Cornell Commitment Convocation is an annual celebration that recognizes the community service, leadership and research contributions of students and Ithaca-area community organizations. It is free and open to the public.

The program, which includes a community recognition awards ceremony, dessert and entertainment, is designed to promote thought and conversation surrounding individual and collective efforts to improve and positively shape the world.

The event is sponsored by the three Cornell Commitment programs: Cornell Tradition, Cornell Presidential Research Scholars and Meinig Family Cornell National Scholars. These programs reward outstanding Cornell undergraduates who demonstrate, respectively, excellence in work ethic and campus and/or community service, research experience, and leadership and academic achievement.
