Council for the Arts honors two students for their achievements in creative writing, film and dance

The Cornell Council for the Arts (CCA) recently honored two Cornell students for their academic and artistic achievements.

• Maria Adelmann, a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences, received the 2006-07 Edward M. Murray Committee on the Arts Scholarship for her work in creative writing. The scholarship was established by the alumni-run committee in 2000 in memory of Murray, a Cornell professor of music and a conductor, composer and pianist. It offers $2,150 in financial aid replacement for undergraduates demonstrating exceptional promise and majoring in arts and culture-related programs.

Adelmann is majoring in psychology and English with a concentration in creative writing. She is an editor of The Public Journal, currently published at Cornell and at Tufts University, and co-author of the College Prowler guide, "Cornell University: Off the Record." Her work "Bad Training: A Collection of Stories About High School" won the 2005 Arthur Lynn Andrews Award for Fiction. She works as an office assistant and graphic design artist for the Student Activities Office and the Office of Student Support; her staff and volunteer roles earned her the 2006 Daniel F. Mahaney Award and a Cornell Tradition Fellowship. Adelmann gave a brief talk about herself and her work at the Committee on the Arts' annual meeting Oct. 27.

• Catherine Galasso '06 received the 2006-07 Cornell Undergraduate Artist Award, given annually to students demonstrating distinction and excellence in the arts, Oct. 27 at the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts. The honor includes a $1,000 prize.

Galasso, who graduated in May with a B.A. in film, was cited for the breadth of her achievements and uniqueness of expression as a performance artist, dancer, filmmaker and choreographer. The award presentation and reception at the Schwartz Center was preceded by "It Works If You Work It," a multimedia and dance performance by Galasso and Cornell dancers, co-presented by the CCA and the Department of Theatre, Film and Dance.
