Call for Slope Day 2008 volunteers

Volunteers are needed to help with this year's Slope Day, slated for Friday, May 2.

Volunteers are not responsible for policing the slope, just for helping to make the last day of classes safe, relaxing and enjoyable for everyone. Volunteers significantly contribute to the success of this event, and both past volunteers and those who have never before volunteered for Slope Day are needed. Although four-hour volunteer shifts are preferred, there is also a need for two-hour volunteer shifts.

All staff/faculty volunteers are asked to submit an online application at http://www.slopeday.cornell.edu/, where more information is available.

Volunteers should plan to attend one of the training sessions, where volunteer duties will be reviewed. The dates, times and location for the training can be found on the application.

Pay practices for Slope Day

For volunteers: Supervisor approval is needed for release time from work for volunteer hours that coincide with scheduled work hours. Hours spent volunteering will be considered paid release time (i.e. paid leave) if they coincide with scheduled work hours. Hours spent volunteering that fall outside of scheduled work hours will be without pay.

For staff required to work: Nonexempt staff who are required to work the Slope Day event must be paid for all hours worked during the event, even if such hours do not coincide with their regularly scheduled work hours. Such time should be entered as "regular" in the time collection system. If you are unsure whether you are assisting at Slope Day in a volunteer capacity or in a required capacity, contact either your supervisor, your local Human Resources representative or the Division of Human Resources (255-6894) for clarification.

Exempt staff: Exempt staff who volunteer for or are required to work during Slope Day will receive their usual compensation.
