Bourke-White Photo Portfolio Competition open to students

Cornell undergraduate and graduate students are invited to submit a portfolio of photographic work for consideration for the second annual Margaret Bourke-White Photography Portfolio Prize. The competition is administered by the Department of Art in the College of Architecture, Art and Planning.

All students enrolled as of the fall 2008 semester can submit a portfolio of photographs. The contest is not open to extramural students.

Portfolios can include analog or digital, color or black-and-white prints and must include eight to 10 exhibition-quality photographs. There are no specific content or composition guidelines, but portfolios should represent a thoughtfully developed body of work.

Each photograph must be labeled (on the back only) with the entrant's name, title and date of photograph, dimensions and type of photographic process (e.g., gelatin silver print, digital print, Polaroid print, etc.). There are no minimum or maximum dimensional requirements. Contemporary or antiquarian photographic processes are acceptable, as are digitally edited or manipulated photographs. Digital files cannot be accepted in lieu of a physical portfolio.

Entrants can also include an optional one-paragraph statement to introduce or describe their portfolio. Joint or collaborative portfolios can be submitted, but individuals may not submit more than one portfolio for consideration.

The juried prize is $7,500. The competition is supported by an anonymous donor.

A completed entry form must be submitted with each portfolio. The deadline for submissions is 3 p.m. Oct. 27. All portfolios must be submitted to the Department of Art office, 224 Olive Tjaden Hall. Entry forms are available in the department office and online at http://www.aap.cornell.edu/aap/art/resources/.

A jury will select the prize-winning portfolio in November. Presentation of the prize will take place during the 2009 spring semester.
