Dreaming of a white Christmas? CU offers odds

If you want to go where you have the best chance of a white Christmas, head for Pinkham Notch, N.H., where there is a 95 percent chance there will be at least an inch of snow on the ground Dec. 25, according to the Northeast Regional Climate Center at Cornell.

The center just released predictions for the percentage chance of 1 inch of snow on the ground for Christmas in select Northeast cities.

The top five places are: Pinkham Notch, N.H., 95 percent probability; Boonville, N.Y., 94; Old Forge, N.Y., 92; Caribou, Maine, 92; St. Johnsbury, Vt., 89.

In Connecticut, your best bet is Norfolk with 79 percent probability, and in Massachusetts, it is Ashburnham, 72.

And even though a major storm is due to hit the Northeast Dec. 19, the chance there will be an inch of snow on Christmas in New York City, Baltimore or Philadelphia is a mere 12 percent; but in Washington, D.C., it is 13 percent.
