Hutchens is new director of Cornell in Washington Program

Hutchens

Robert Hutchens, professor of labor economics in Cornell's ILR School, has been named director of the Cornell in Washington (CIW) program.

CIW gives undergraduates the opportunity to live, learn and work in the nation's capital. Hutchens succeeds history professor Stuart Blumin, who led the CIW program for 10 years and plans to retire in January. Also recently appointed is Carol Fields Hagen as director of operations; Hagen replaces Linda Jarschauer Johnson, who retired in October after 25 years of service.

Hutchens received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Wisconsin in 1976, specializing in labor economics, public finance and econometrics. His teaching focuses on labor economics and on the economics of government tax and transfer programs. Hutchens has also served as a policy fellow at the Brookings Institution, chairman of Cornell's Department of Labor Economics and research fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor in Germany.

Hagen holds a bachelor's degree in international relations and economics from American University. She has worked for Cornell in Washington since 1984, most recently as the program's administrative manager.

Since the early 1980s, more than 2,700 students have participated in CIW. CIW also hosts a Summer in Washington program open to students from any university. For more information, see http://www.ciw.cornell.edu.
