Four vet lab staff members honored

Staff members of the Cornell Center for Animal Resources and Education (CARE), the College of Veterinary Medicine's Department of Laboratory Animal Services (LAS) and the James A. Baker Institute for Animal Health Baker were honored at the Upstate New York Branch (UNYB) of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Sept. 16 in Syracuse, N.Y.

Deborah Alo received a lifetime membership to the AALAS branch in recognition of her contributions to UNYB AALAS, national AALAS and the Laboratory Animal Management Association. She recently retired as LAS manager after 35 years of service.

Jackie Wright, supervisor of animal care at the Baker Institute, received an award for writing the best article of the past year for the UNYB AALAS newsletter, on "International Laboratory Animal Technician Week Celebration at Cornell 2009."

Carol Barriere received the Bio-Serv Enhancement or Improvement of Animal Welfare Award, for her "positive impact to enrich, enhance or improve the lives of animals or their owners." Barriere, a CARE animal technologist, has developed strategies for the enrichment program for Cornell's animals.

Kathy Reinhard, associate director of CARE/LAS, received the Charles E. Schadler Award for her long-term commitment and outstanding contributions to the principles of humane laboratory animal care and the UNYB AALAS.
