Institute on higher ed technology policy set for July 19-22

Cornell will welcome webmasters, computer security officers, university attorneys and others to the fifteenth annual Cornell University/EDUCAUSE Institute for Computer Policy and Law (ICPL), July 19-22 at the Statler Hotel on the Ithaca campus.

The seminar is for anyone in higher education who develops, implements or enforces technology policies. Through lectures, case studies and panel discussions, nationally recognized technologists and legal experts will examine how the widespread use of the Internet is affecting campus policies, procedures and judicial systems.

The event will be led by Tracy Mitrano, director of IT policy for Cornell's Office of Information Technologies, and Steven Worona, director of policy and networking for EDUCAUSE, a nonprofit whose mission is to advance higher education by promoting the intelligent use of information technology.

The institute will feature a keynote speech by Cliff Lynch, executive director of the Coalition for Networked Information, a nonprofit that supports IT networks for scholarly communication. Also on the schedule are sessions on recent developments in computer policy, law and the Internet; an introduction to laws that apply in cyberspace; network security policies and the discovery of electronic evidence in litigation; policy options for social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook; and the laws and politics of digital copyright.
