Digital signs bring the news to public walls

Soon you won't even have to go to your computer for the latest news. It will be right there on the wall.

"Digital signs," in the form of 42- to 56-inch high-definition video displays, are being deployed across campus to offer event listings, weather, a news ticker and videos of lectures and other features from CornellCast. The project, dubbed "CUView," is a joint venture of Cornell Information Technologies, Facilities Services and Campus Information and Visitor Relations (CIVR).

Each unit will control its own content, but all the programming will come from a single computer server, making it possible to push emergency messages or coverage of major events like commencement to all signs at once.

Signs are up now in Ives Hall and Mann Library, and are coming soon in the Day Hall lobby, the CHESS facility and North Campus common areas. "We hope other colleges and divisions will consider installing digital signage in public areas, especially where emergency messages would be effective," said Donna Goss, who manages the project for CIVR.
