AguaClara wins cash prize at Tech Awards gala

AguaClara, Cornell's water treatment and technology development program, has won a $50,000 cash prize in association with the 2011 Intel Environment Award.

The civil and environmental engineering team, which researches and designs gravity-powered drinking water treatment plants, received the prize during the Tech Awards gala Oct. 20 in Santa Clara, Calif. The engineering team had previously been named http://www.news.cornell.edu/stories/Sept11/IntelAguaClara.html one of three Intel Environment Award laureates, recognized for applying technology to the benefit of humanity.

"This award is well-deserved recognition of six years of collaborative work by the AguaClara team at Cornell and Agua Para el Pueblo," said Monroe Weber-Shirk, senior lecturer in civil and environmental engineering and leader of AguaClara.

Agua Para el Pueblo (APP) is AguaClara's Honduran nonprofit partner organization. According to Weber-Shirk, the $50,000 will go to APP to support ongoing work in developing AguaClara technologies.
