The Cornell Real Estate Review has named Gerald Hines the recipient of the 2013 Cornell Real Estate Industry Leadership Award, which recognizes individuals who have demonstrated transformational leadership and whose influence and integrity have created a lasting legacy within the industry.

Hines is founder and chairman of the Hines company, one of the largest real estate organizations in the world with offices in 104 cities in 18 countries, and controlled assets valued at approximately $23.8 billion. Established in 1955, the privately owned firm’s historical and current portfolio includes more than 1,200 properties, from residential, mixed-use, industrial, hotel, medical and sports facilities to large master-planned communities and developments.

"Frank Gehry. Pei Cobb Freed. Jean Nouvel. Philip Johnson. Cesar Pelli. Moshe Safdie. This is just a sample of the remarkable list of architects that Gerald Hines has partnered with,” said Kent Kleinman, the Gale and Ira Drukier Dean of the College of Architecture, Art and Planning. “Across the country, and indeed across the globe, he has brought an unprecedented level of design talent to urban centers. If there is one person who embodies high-quality development and the value of comprehensive urban design, it is Gerald Hines.”

About 35 to 40 Cornell graduate students participate in the annual ULI/Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition, established in his honor.

“The Hines name is synonymous with high-quality design and construction, as well as great investment returns over the long term for his investors,” said Michael D. Johnson, the E.M. Statler Professor and Dean of the School of Hotel Administration. “Gerald Hines’ innovative spirit and standard of excellence are hallmarks of his company’s 50-plus-year history. We are pleased to have an opportunity to recognize him for this exceptional record of achievement.”

Hines will speak in the Baker Program in Real Estate’s Distinguished Speaker Series, April 30, 4:45 p.m. in Milstein Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

Hines also will be featured in the Cornell Real Estate Review’s 2013 edition, and he will be honored at the 31st annual Cornell Real Estate Conference, Oct. 10-11 in New York City.

The Cornell Real Estate Review was founded in 2002 as a forum for faculty, professionals and students, focusing attention on current issues in the industry, with articles on real estate practice and applied academic research and reflecting a broad range of disciplines including design, business economics, engineering, finance, law, planning, development, marketing and property management.
