Professor of history Maria Cristina Garcia, the Howard A. Newman Professor of American Studies at Cornell, has been chosen as a fellow for 2013-14 by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C.

Her project as a Woodrow Wilson Center Fellow in residence will be “Refuge in Post-Cold War America.”

Garcia is one of 21 fellows selected this year in a fellowship class that includes scholars and practitioners from the United States, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, the Netherlands and New Zealand. Most will spend an academic year in residence at the center, starting in September.

“The Wilson Center brings together thinkers and doers – policymakers, scholars and business leaders – in a safe political space for informed, open and civil discussion about the tough issues we face,” said Jane Harman, the center’s director, president and CEO. “Wilson Center scholars are the backbone of the institution – and their diversity adds immensely to the richness of thought and dialogue. We are proud to have such a distinguished group of women and men joining us this fall.”

The Woodrow Wilson Center provides a strictly nonpartisan space for the worlds of policymaking and scholarship to interact. Through relevant and timely research and promoting dialogue from all perspectives, the center works to address critical current and emerging challenges confronting the United States and the world. It was created by an Act of Congress in 1968 to honor President Woodrow Wilson, and is supported by public and private funds.
