Anne Sauer, director of Digital Collections and Archives at Tufts University since 2004, has been appointed the first endowed director of Cornell University Library’s Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections (RMC). Sauer holds the Stephen E. and Evalyn Edwards Milman Directorship of Rare and Manuscript Collections.

“The Milman directorship is vital to the library, and it affirms the importance of RMC’s strong leadership,” said Anne R. Kenney, the Carl A. Kroch University Librarian. “Anne is an ideal candidate for the first endowed director, as well. She’s bringing wonderful vision, innovation skills, resourcefulness and people skills to our library.”

“I am extraordinarily honored by the Milmans’ decision to endow the directorship of RMC,” Sauer said. “Their investment shows tremendous vision and commitment to the importance of the collections RMC stewards and the staff that make that stewardship possible. I am very excited to be able to make that vision a reality.”Evalyn Milman ’60 and Stephen Milman ’58, MBA ’59, have been involved in the library for many years, supporting a lecture series and RMC exhibitions.

“I hope that students, faculty and alumni all learn a greater recognition of the importance of the rare book collection,” Stephen Milman said. “Exhibitions come out of it, but it’s also available to faculty and students – and also alumni when they come back to school to take some time out and investigate the nature of the collection.”

The RMC director oversees and mentors more than 20 archivists, curators and other staff members; develops wide-ranging relationships inside and outside the library; pursues and stewards funding and grant opportunities; and contributes vision to strategic plans to preserve and promote Cornell’s status as one of the nation’s premier repositories of rare books and manuscript collections.

At Tufts, Sauer oversaw institutional archives, manuscript collections, records management and digital repositories. She focused on digital collections management, particularly developing a program that could sustain the university’s burgeoning digitized and born-digital collections.

The Cornell University Board of Trustees approved Sauer’s appointment in May.
