Cornell Engineering celebrates its legacy of leadership and innovation with a weekend of sesquicentennial celebration events Oct. 23-24.

Featured speakers include Robert Langer ’70, the David H. Koch Institute Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and 2015 Cornell Entrepreneur of the Year, and Padmasree Warrior, M.Eng. ’84, former chief technology officer for Cisco Systems and Motorola, who is on Forbes magazine’s list of the world’s most powerful women. University of Florida President Kent Fuchs, former Cornell dean of engineering and university provost, also will participate.

Friday Oct. 23

1 p.m.: Welcome and History of Cornell Engineering featuring Lance Collins, the Joseph Silbert Dean of Engineering; Frank Moon, the Joseph C. Ford Professor of Engineering Emeritus; and John Abel, emeritus professor, civil and environmental engineering. Nora Stanton Blatch Barney, the first American woman to earn a degree in civil engineering, will be honored. Barney was the first female member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, where she was allowed to be a junior member only and denied advancement to associate member in 1916 solely because of her gender. To right this wrong, ASCE elected her a fellow in 2015.

2 p.m.: Honoring the Deans with former Deans Fuchs, Chris Ober, Harold Craighead and John Hopcroft.

Saturday Oct. 24

9:15 a.m.: Cornell Tech and Entrepreneurship@Cornell, featuring Dan Huttenlocher, vice provost and dean of Cornell Tech, and Zachary Shulman ’87, J.D. ’90, director of Entrepreneurship@Cornell.

1:15 p.m.: Future of Engineering, a conversation about the next 50 years of engineering with Collins, Langer and Warrior.

3 p.m.: Unveiling the time capsule. Student project teams have built three capsules, one of which will be filled with engineering memorabilia and buried under the sundial on the Engineering Quad. Vote for your favorite.

4:15 p.m.: Lab tours, device exhibits, student project team displays.
