Internationalization Symposium set for May 18

Faculty, administrators and staff are invited to participate in Cornell's Third Internationalization Symposium, “The Globally Engaged Campus: Defining and Redefining Where We Are,” which will be held Wednesday, May 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. in G-10 Biotechnology Building.

The symposium will explore Cornell’s opportunities for meaningful international experiences on the Ithaca campus.

“‘Meaningful’ suggests the critical reflection and learning needed to gain self- and global knowledge, raise awareness and commit to responsible global citizenship,” says David R. Lee, provost’s fellow for internationalization, International Professor of Applied Economics and Management in the Dyson School. “Throughout the day’s sessions we will examine, critique and highlight our individual and collective efforts.”

The symposium will focus on two themes: International Identities: Opportunities and Challenges for Encounter and Exchange; and Toward Intercultural Fluency: Practical Skills, Languages and More.

Guest speakers include:

  • Fred Dervin, professor of multicultural education, University of Helsinki: "Intercultural Competence";
  • Adriana Medina-López-Portillo, associate professor of intercultural communication and Spanish, University of Maryland, Baltimore County: "Practical Skills for Increasing Intercultural Communication";
  • William McClure, dean of faculty, Division of Arts and Humanities, Queens College: "Whose Language: Mine, Yours or Ours?"

Participants will join the conversation through the ideas presented by guest speakers, student and faculty panels, a poster session and breakout sessions. They will explore ways to support global learning and increase intercultural knowledge and competence, as relevant to their professional context, to enhance the international dimensions of student experiences on campus.

The symposium is sponsored by the Office of the Vice Provost for International Affairs and is being organized by the Center for Teaching Excellence in collaboration with Cornell Abroad, Engaged Cornell, Language Resource Center, the Einaudi Center and the Office of Academic Diversity Initiatives.
