This summer’s donations to the Cornell Elves’ Backpack Program resulted in 1,110 backpacks – filled with such items as notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers and rulers – that were distributed to 31 schools from Tompkins, Seneca, Tioga, Cortland, Cayuga and Schuyler Counties in early September.
The donations filled two rooms at the East Hill Office Building, and more backpacks were collected by each of the program’s leaders.
The Backpack Program, part of Cornell’s Elves Program, just completed its 11th year.
“I would like to thank Walmart, which started us off with a generous donation from their community grant program; the UAW Local 2300; CFCU Community Federal Credit Union; the law offices of Miller Mayer and, from Cornell, Cornell University Library; Cornell Law School; Procurement Services; Computing and Information Science; and the Lab of Ornithology,” said Maureen Brull, program coordinator and senior consultant for education and voluntary plans in Benefit Services.
“Thanks also to the leaders of the program, who work within the school district they represent to collect funds, find sponsors and deliver the backpacks to the schools, and all members of the Cornell community who donated to this year’s program,” Brull said.
