Due to a major outage on fiber-optic lines over which AT&T and Verizon connect the campus to Syracuse – and from there to the rest of the world – calls from outside have not been reaching campus phones since Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 15. Verizon has acknowledged a line was cut and estimates the repair will be completed by the morning of Nov. 17.

The problem affects calls to Cornell phone numbers made from cell phones, local/long-distance/toll-free numbers, Cornell Tech, Cornell Weill Medicine and Cornell Cooperative Extension offices. Calls from the Geneva Agricultural Research Station, which is served by Cornell’s internal system, are coming through. Two-step login verification may be affected in some cases.

Calls from one campus phone to another, 911 calls or calls from campus phones to outside numbers are not affected.

Cornell Information Technologies offers these workarounds:

• In an emergency call 911 or use a Blue Light phone.
• For any other police service or urgent campus matter: From a campus phone, call 607-255-1111. From a cell or off-campus phone, call 607-257-9296 or 607-257-9297.
• Cornell Health: For urgent health care needs, call 607-255-5155 from a campus phone during office hours. From a cell or off-campus phone (and from all phones after hours), call 607-330-5037. For routine Cornell Health appointments, schedule online.
• Email veterinary hospitals or call 607-253-3060 or 607-342-0460.
• IPP Customer Service: From a campus phone, call 607-255-5322. From a cell or off-campus phone, 607-342-7387.
• Campus Life (Dining, Housing, Community Center Operations, Conference Services): From a campus phone, call 607-255-5368. From a cell or off-campus phone, 607-793-1508 or 607-793-1332.
• Campus-to-Campus bus: From a campus phone, call 607-254-8747. From a cell or off-campus phone, 607-739-6658.
• Statler Hotel: room reservations; dining reservations. From a campus phone, call 607-254-2500; from a cell or off-campus phone, call 607-227-5614.
• Email the bursar or from a campus phone, call 607-255-2336. For urgent situations from a cell or off-campus phone, call 607-262-2022.
• Division of Financial Affairs: email the desired department. For urgent situations, from a cell or off-campus phone, call 607-262-2022.
• Two-Step Login: If you use your campus phone as the verification step, switch to the backup method you set up. The IT Service Desk can help if you don’t have a backup method.
