Dr. Henry Heimlich '41, M.D. '43, creator of the life-saving Heimlich maneuver, returns to campus June 11 to conduct the Big Red Alumni Band while celebrating his 75th Cornell reunion. Heimlich was the Big Red Band drum major in 1939.
Watch Heimlich lead the band at 11:30 a.m. EDT on Facebook.
According to an article published May 27 in the Guardian, the retired surgeon used the technique that bears his name to save the life of a woman who was choking at the dinner table of his Cincinnati, Ohio, assisted living community.
“It was very gratifying,” Heimlich told the Guardian. “That moment was very important to me. I knew about all the lives my maneuver has saved over the years and I have demonstrated it so many times but here, for the first time, was someone sitting right next to me who was about to die. ... I did it, and a piece of food with some bone in it flew out of her mouth.”
