Cornell: one of America’s favorite charities

Cornell is among the top 10 among The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s new list of America’s Favorite Charities.

Published Oct. 30, the ranking identifies the organizations that Americans are most willing to support. Cornell, at No. 9, joins respected nonprofits (including United Way Worldwide and the Salvation Army) and other universities (including Harvard and Stanford) in the top 10. The ranking is based on an institution’s cash support – the total value of money and stock it received as gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations.

“I am delighted the Chronicle of Philanthropy recognizes the generosity and loyalty of Cornell donors,” said Fred Van Sickle, vice president for alumni affairs and development. “The university’s mission of learning, discovery and engagement is made possible by their investments.”

Cornellians made fiscal year 2018 (July 1, 2017-June 30, 2018) another successful one for philanthropy and participation. The university received $512 million in new gifts and commitments, including $436 million raised for the Ithaca and Cornell Tech campuses and $77 million for Weill Cornell Medicine. Gifts to Cornell Annual Funds totaled $44.4 million, surpassing the FY17 record of $41.7 million. A record 79,000 donors contributed to these results.
