Mettler selected as 2019 Radcliffe Institute fellow

Fresh off winning a Guggenheim fellowship, democracy scholar Suzanne Mettler, Ph.D. ’94, has just received another honor: a Radcliffe Institute fellowship.

Suzanne Mettler

Mettler, the John L. Senior Professor of American Institutions in the Department of Government in the College of Arts and Sciences, will spend the 2019-2020 academic year at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, a school at Harvard University dedicated to creating and sharing transformative ideas across all disciplines.

Mettler will join more than 50 fellows in the incoming class – including Esra Akcan, associate professor of architecture – as they pursue independent work across the sciences, social sciences, humanities and arts. Only 3.7% of applicants are accepted to the institute.

Mettler is examining crises of democracy throughout American history and what can be learned from them to illuminate the state of democracy today, the factors that endanger it and how it can be revitalized. In 2017, she initiated the American Democracy Collaborative, a group of scholars of American political development and comparative politics who are evaluating the likelihood of democratic deterioration in the United States.

While in residence, Mettler and the other fellows at the Radcliffe Institute will present lectures and exhibitions to the public, participate in multidisciplinary study groups, and work with undergraduate Harvard students who serve as research partners.
