Entrepreneurship experts discuss strategies for ‘side hustle’

Deborah Streeter, professor emeritus in the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management, will co-host a live webcast, “The Side Hustle: Strategies for Success,” Jan. 22 at 1 p.m. Registration for this hourlong event is on the eCornell website.

Streeter’s co-host will be Kirsten Barker, program director for the Bank of America Institute for Women’s Entrepreneurship at Cornell. Streeter and Barker will examine the concept of the “side hustle” – defined as any money-making activity outside of a person’s normal job – and conduct a live Q&A.

The idea of the side hustle dates back to the 1950s, but the term has exploded in popularity in recent years as more people have been forced to find creative ways of making ends meet.

In “The Side Hustle,” Streeter and Barker will explore:

  • whether the term “side hustle” is a celebration of entrepreneurial activities or a way of minimizing those actions;
  • how gender and race affect people’s approaches to side hustles and their attitudes toward those engaged in them; and
  • Tips and strategies for nurturing your side hustle.

This event is the first in a live webcast series, to be hosted by Streeter.
