Director Robert H. Lieberman ’62 takes viewers on a journey into the vast and little-known country of Mongolia in his latest film, “Echoes of the Empire: Beyond Genghis Khan,” in a one-week online sneak peek beginning Oct. 16.

Cornell Cinema and Cinemapolis of Ithaca are presenting the advance showings, ahead of the film’s international release. The film will be available for two-day rental, for $12.

An online Q&A with Lieberman and Deborah C. Hoard, MPS ’78, the film’s producer, is scheduled for Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. Hoard is president of Ithaca-based film studio PhotoSynthesis Productions.

“Echoes of the Empire” follows the remarkable evolution of Genghis Khan’s Mongol Empire, a realm that once encompassed all of Asia, the Middle East and even parts of Europe. According to the filmmakers, “Echoes of the Empire” offers intimate portraits of today’s Mongolians, young and old, providing insights into the minds of these former warriors and nomads and the challenges they face in their post-Soviet world.

Lieberman, a novelist, film director and courtesy senior physics lecturer in the College of Arts and Sciences, began his film career in 1984 with the PBS film “Faces In a Famine,” shot at the height of the Ethiopian famine.

Other Cornellians involved in Lieberman’s latest film include Zorba B. Lieberman ’87, MBA ’92, associate producer; and production and research assistants Alexa Marcasciano ’20 and Lauren Gabuzzi ’16.

Proceeds from the screening will support Cinemapolis and PhotoSynthesis. Visit the Cinemapolis website to see the trailer and to purchase tickets.
