CEOs of some of the biggest artificial intelligence companies are calling for a slowdown in the technology’s development to allow for more guardrails to be put in place. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, in an essay shared on X, called on companies to slow the rate at which they advance model capabilities amid growing fears of losing control of AI systems. Both Elon Musk, who runs xAI, and Sam Altman, of OpenAI, said they agree with Amodei.
Ayham Boucher, executive director of AI Strategy and Innovation at Cornell University, explains why the same people behind the AI boom are now calling for its potential slowdown.
Boucher says:
“This is contradictory in nature, but the explanation is not that complex. AI scientists today have the tools and techniques to make AI more powerful and smarter. At the same time, they lack the same to control the AI models’ behavior.
“If nothing changes, we're guaranteed to produce a more powerful and smarter AI, while we have no good grip on how it would react in certain situations, in fact, we have evidence that current AI models will indeed participate in dangerous and damaging acts.”
