James Grimmelmann, professor of digital and information law at Cornell University, is an expert in intellectual property. He has written more than fifty scholarly articles and essays on digital copyright, search engine regulation, online governance, and other topics in computer and Internet law.

Grimmelmann says:

“Fairly Trained could provide an important signal for artists and users who want to know which AI companies share their values, like the Fairtrade mark for labor practices. Given the massive legal uncertainty around AI training, a certification mark is a good way provide clarity now. Unfortunately, the name could be confusing. A Fairly Trained model will be one that does not rely on fair use.”
