Spotted lanternfly in NY poses risk for vineyards, hops, landscape

On Friday, the New York State Departments of Agriculture and Markets and Environmental Conservation as well as the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced the spotted lanternfly was found on Staten Island, New York. Brian Eshenaur, plant pathologist and a senior extension associate with the New York State Integrated Pest Management program and Jody Gangloff-Kaufmann, an entomologist whose work focuses on integrated pest management weigh in on the landscape risks associated with the spotted lanternfly in New York.

Second stimulus bill needed to prevent additional job losses

On Thursday, the Senate failed to pass a pared-down coronavirus relief package and the U.S. Department of Labor reported more than 857,000 workers filed new unemployment claims in the past week. Russell Weaver, an economic geographer with Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR) Buffalo Co-Lab says an increase in job losses are likely if appropriate actions are not taken to stimulate the economy.
