Keep schools closed. They’re ‘dangerous breeding grounds’ for coronavirus

President Trump suggested states should seriously consider reopening their public schools before the end of the academic year, even though many have already said it would be unsafe for students to return to school before next fall. Lee Adler, an expert on education and academic union issues says until widespread testing is available across the country it’s not safe for schools to reopen.

Arrogance, poor judgement at core of Ghosn’s misconduct

On Monday, Japanese carmaker Nissan announced that it was firing its chairman, Carlos Ghosn after authorities had arrested him for alleged financial misconduct. Ghosn is accused of having under-reported over $44 million in pay and of having diverted company funds for personal use. Arthur Wheaton, a car industry expert at Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations, says that Ghosn’s case is an – unsurprising – example of corporate greed.

In embracing hybrid work, Salesforce sees clear cost savings

February 10, 2021

Salesforce, a leading cloud-based software company based in San Francisco, announced this week that it would allow its employees to “work remotely part or full time after the pandemic.” Bradford S. Bell says that Salesforce is not alone in suggesting hybrid work arrangements in the long term. He adds that such decisions carry important cost-saving and other benefits for companies with a significant real estate footprint, like Salesforce.

How to spot a weak, overheated labor market

On Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will release its monthly job report. Since the end of the Great Recession, the labor market improved steadily and analysts will be looking at the numbers in the job report for clues on how much longer that expansion will last, says Erica Groshen. Goshen is a visiting senior scholar at Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations.
