The number of children living in poverty in the United States is down to 16 percent --the lowest in 20 years. The reason is largely that more mothers -- especially single mothers -- are working and not because of changes in family structure, reports Cornell University's Daniel Lichter, in Social Sciences Quarterly. Cornell will host the TransPositions conference March 27-29, exploring the facets of transgender identity, culture and academic studies. Transgender studies encompass the blurring of conventional gender norms, including transsexuality, crossdressing, intersexuality and androgyny.

Cornell University Provost Biddy Martin and Vice President for Student and Academic Services Susan Murphy have established a campuswide Council on Mental Health and Welfare, an initiative aimed at bringing broad-based and sustained attention to the mental health of Cornell students. "Information from a variety of sources, nationally and here at Cornell, indicates that the number of students experiencing mental health problems has increased significantly over the past decade," says Murphy, who chairs the council.
