Ceremonies on Sept. 11, 2003, at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine gave a name to the school's program to study cancer in humans as well as animals -- the new Isidor I. and Sylvia M. Sprecher Institute for Comparative Cancer Research. The institute name acknowledges a major gift from Isidor Sprecker, a 1939 DVM graduate of the college, and his wife, Sylvia, a teacher and author. The Spreckers changed the spelling of their name to clarify its pronunciation but have preserved the original spelling, Sprecher, for their gifts. An earlier gift from the Spreckers added their name to that of an 1800s governor of New York state, creating the Roswell P. Flower-Isidor I. and Sylvia M. Sprecher Library and Resources Center. On Saturday, Oct. 2, Cornell University will host an open house on campus for prospective freshman students at two of its state-supported colleges -- the New York State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR). Students interested in learning about admission to those colleges are encouraged to attend. The open house provides high school juniors, seniors and their parents the opportunity to visit CALS and the ILR School. Visitors will receive an overview of the university and the academic programs in these colleges and meet admissions staff, faculty and current Cornell students. The book makes its point by examining the ambivalence of parent-child relations in later life. "Parenting is fraught with mixed emotions, thoughts and attitudes. Such ambivalence is apparently universal and a fundamental characteristic of relationships between parents and adult children," says Karl Pillemer, professor of human development at Cornell and co-editor of Intergenerational Ambivalences: New Perspectives on Parent-Child Relations in Later Life (Elsevier Publishers, 2004).
