Nearly 50 million Americans have had coverage in the Affordable Care Act marketplace since 2014, according to tax data published by the Treasury Department today.
Nick Fabrizio, senior lecturer of health policy at Cornell University, says we aren’t likely to hear former President Trump call for the repeal of ACA during tonight’s debate and that, at this point, Americans expect that the government will provide all citizens with a basic level of healthcare.
“I don’t believe we’ll hear anything of substance from Trump during tonight’s debate about repealing the ACA—unless a better alternative can be provided. While there may be some in Congress who talk about repealing the ACA, it would be very difficult for Congress to pass a bill that takes health care coverage away from Americans. While every governmental program can be improved and made more efficient and effective, the goal of the ACA was to provide health care coverage to the uninsured and 50 million people have had coverage in the ACA marketplace since 2014.
“In practical terms, if members of Congress want to repeal the ACA, they are going to have to develop and implement an alternative that provides the same or a better level of coverage—not less. The genie is out of the bottle - Americans expect that the government will provide all citizens with a basic level of health care.”
