Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook is suing the Trump administration in an effort to block the president from firing her.
Robert Hockett, professor of law and public finance at Cornell Law School, provides his prediction on how the Federal Reserve will respond.
“Trump’s actions have no legal reality - none. With this lawsuit, the question arises what role Cook will play on the Board pending resolution of the litigation.
“I believe the courts will act quickly in this case. Our economy’s stability rides on our financial markets’ stability, and nothing is more destabilizing than ongoing uncertainty as to the integrity of the dollar and of its issuer - the Federal Reserve of the United States.
“The Fed Board knows as well as the courts that our financial and monetary stability, both short term and long term, depend upon Fed stability, and Fed stability requires that the Fed once again simply ignore Trump’s latest stunt. I anticipate the Fed will close ranks around Governor Cook as it did around Fed Chairman Powell earlier this month and all year.”
