As recess quickly approaches, House Republican leaders just rejected a Senate bill that would partially fund DHS.

Dan Lamb, former congressional aide for 15 years and senior lecturer at the Cornell Brooks School of Public Policy, can speak to the political dynamics at play and how both sides of the aisle are strategizing on the issue.

“With this funding impasse, we’re seeing the GOP’s lack of strategy and coordination on full display.  Democrats in both chambers remain united in tying DHS funding to popular ICE reforms such as mandating judicial warrants, banning masks, and increasing oversight.

“The dynamic favors Democrats. As the party in power, the GOP is taking greater blame for high-profile delays snarling major airports.  This may have been what prompted the Senate to act just hours before their two-week recess, effectively jamming the lower chamber.”
