New research suggests DeepSeek has code hidden in its programming with the capability of sending user data directly to the Chinese government.

Severin Engelmann, a postdoctoral fellow at the Digital Life Initiative within Cornell Tech, studies the design of ethical and beneficial artificial intelligence.

Engelmann says:

"While our understanding of data sharing between DeepSeek and state-owned China Mobile is limited, it's important to recognize that in China, the lines between government and commercial sectors are often blurred. The Chinese Social Credit System, for example, integrates data from commercial scoring apps into government credit reporting, and key governmental infrastructures are operated by companies like Baidu, China’s equivalent of Google.

“U.S. usage of DeepSeek will inevitably result in U.S. data being transferred to technological infrastructures in China, where state and corporate interests are deeply intertwined."
