Tens of thousands of airline workers could face layoffs on Thursday, after Congressional relief aid designed to help airlines, among other industries, expired without an alternative bill in place.
Arthur Wheaton, an expert in auto and airline industries at Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations, is available for interviews following layoff announcements today.

“The impending layoffs by the airlines are only the beginning of job cuts in the sector. Through no fault of their own, tens of thousands of workers will lose their jobs, as the payroll protection plan deadlines ended today.
“Besides United and American Airlines, thousands of parking, busing, food service and maintenance workers will be laid off due to the pandemic and drop in demand.
“Those fortunate enough to have a collective bargaining agreement may be able to have some minor protections but most will suffer financially for years until demand rebounds.”
