Texas freeze may signal long-term dairy woes, minimal national effect

February 22, 2021

Agricultural economist, Christopher Wolf, says Texas farmers who lost power for milkings may see prolonged lower production rates given possible negative health impacts for dairy cows. He adds while it’s possible there will be milk shortages in Texas and the surrounding regions, national milk production levels have been high, so most U.S. consumers will not see supply issues caused by the storm.

Grocery stores prepare for new wave of COVID-19 panic-buying

Grocery stores and food retailers are stockpiling products to prepare for another widespread outbreak of COVID-19 cases amidst the already busy holiday season rush. Edward McLaughlin, professor of food industry management and an expert in the efficiency of food distribution systems says food companies, anticipating another potential wave of COVID-19, are putting previous demand buying models aside and are now sending staple goods to grocery stores, even without an order.

While significant, CFAP aid doesn’t resolve dairy demand destruction

Dairy industry takes big hit as pandemic disrupts demands

While the food supply has kept up with consumer demands during the coronavirus pandemic, the dairy industry is seeing major supply chain disruptions given the closures throughout the food service industry. Cornell agricultural economist Andrew Novakovic says small dairy farms and small processors are facing dire economic straits — given the food service industry disruptions and export demand destruction.

Economic uncertainty fueled Fed hold on interest rates

On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve announced that it was leaving interest rates unchanged and cautioned that the bank will be “patient” in future action on interest rates. Cornell University economist Steven C. Kyle, an expert in macroeconomics and government policy, says that signs of a slowdown in the current economic climate are behind the Fed’s recent change of approach.

Are farmers in trouble? Ag Census to highlight farm sector health

As Apple hints at foray into TV streaming, biting competition awaits

Rumors abound about Apple’s likely foray into TV streaming. In confirming the date for its next event, Apple tagged the March 25 invitation with a sentence that hinted at an upcoming video service, reigniting speculation on the company’s streaming plans. Aija Leiponen, professor of applied economics at the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business and an expert on digital markets, studies the way data is commercialized on the internet. She says that Apple will need big hit shows to convince consumers to subscribe to yet another streaming service.
