NYC hotspot interventions ‘wise’ — but are they too late?

On Monday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered new restrictions on COVID-19 hot spots in New York City, including the closure of all private and public schools in the nine city ZIP codes with upticks in coronavirus transmissions. Isaac Weisfuse, a medical epidemiologist at Cornell University says the restrictions are a wise decision to stop the spread of coronavirus but is concerned the interventions may be too late.

Grocery stores prepare for new wave of COVID-19 panic-buying

Grocery stores and food retailers are stockpiling products to prepare for another widespread outbreak of COVID-19 cases amidst the already busy holiday season rush. Edward McLaughlin, professor of food industry management and an expert in the efficiency of food distribution systems says food companies, anticipating another potential wave of COVID-19, are putting previous demand buying models aside and are now sending staple goods to grocery stores, even without an order.

September job report to show slow rebound, ‘hardening’ unemployment

The latest monthly employment report to be released on Friday will help show how fast the U.S. economy is rebounding, amidst renewed discussions in Congress over a second stimulus check. Erica Groshen is senior economics advisor at the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations. She is a former commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and has written extensively on how economies can recover from recessions.

On Friday the Bureau of Labor Statistics will release its monthly jobs report for September 2020. Russell Weaver, an economic geographer, says the September 2020 jobs report is likely to show small gains, but New York state is still lagging behind the rest of the nation.
