With Hong Kong listing, Alibaba wins 24-hour trade cycle

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, which has been trading on the New York Stock Exchange since 2014, is planning a secondary listing in Hong Kong. Trading is expected to begin on Nov. 26. Andrew Karolyi is professor of economics at the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business and an expert in investment management with a focus on the study of international financial markets. Karolyi says that the listing helps to tap into the ever-deepening pools of capital in Asia.

Disney Plus vies for viewers in unstable, fragmented market

This week, Disney made its foray into streaming with a new platform, Disney Plus, that offers viewers the entertainment giant’s trove of original content for a $7 monthly subscription rate.  Aija Leiponen, professor of applied economics at the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business, says that Disney Plus further fragments an already packed market of streaming services.

Relocating Charging Bull ideal solution for post-9/11 NYC

November 12, 2019

New York City officials are finalizing plans to relocate the famous Charging Bull statue from its current location at Bowling Green to a pedestrian area near the New York Stock Exchange. The proposed move, which the mayor’s office says is intended to protect safety and avoid traffic congestion, has been challenged by the artist Arturo Di Modica, who gifted the statue to the city in 1989. Robert Balder, the Executive Director of Cornell’s Architecture Art and Planning department in New York City, and Thomas Campanella, associate professor of city and regional planning, weigh in on the proposed move.
