Composer and Cornell alumnus Steve Reich and senior Maria Dizzia have been selected as the first recipients of two new university awards to recognize excellence in the arts. The Cornell University Alumni Award for Distinction in the Arts will be formally presented to Reich in February 1998 at a campus program. Dizzia will receive the Student Arts Award.

NEW YORK, NY (August 14, 2002)Researchers at Columbia University and the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital suggest that a higher consumption of calories and fat may translate into an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's Disease (AD) for some people.The results of their study, reported in the August issue of Archives of Neurology, suggest that this risk may arise in individuals who have a variant of apolipoprotein E, known as apo E4. Apolipoprotein E (apo E) is a cholesterol-processing protein responsible for transporting cholesterol in and out of cells. There are different variants of apo E, designated by numbers. People inherit one form of apo E from each parent. Studies have shown that those with one copy of the variant apo E4 are at greater risk of developing AD, while those who inherit 2 copies are at even greater risk.
The Mars Exploration Rover, one of the two vehicles scheduled to explore the surface of Mars in 2004, is built and seemingly ready for its trip, complete with a full payload of scientific instruments---- about two years in advance. But this is not the real rover. It is a finely detailed, full-scale model made out of wood, plastic and aluminum that will be put on display in science museums throughout central New York state. It has been built by eight university and two high school students working with Steven Squyres, Cornell University professor of astronomy, who is the principal investigator on the Athena science payload to be carried by the long-range rovers.
