At its seventh annual convocation, March 1, The Cornell Tradition awarded its first annual Cornell Tradition Community Recognition Award to Ithacan Mimi Melegrito. The Cornell Tradition is an alumni-endowed fellowship program at Cornell University that recognizes and rewards outstanding students dedicated to work, service and scholarship. This past fall, the Student Advisory Council of Cornell Tradition created the new award to recognize and honor an Ithaca area person who has demonstrated a strong commitment to community service and/or leadership. An awards committee solicited nominations from community agencies of candidates who exemplify the Cornell Tradition ideal of improving their community through dedication to service. In December, a selection committee composed of members from both the Cornell and Ithaca communities evaluated all of the nominations and selected Melegrito as the first recipient of the Cornell Tradition Community Recognition Award. Mark Bain, an aquatic biologist and associate professor of natural resources at Cornell University, has been named director of the university's Center for the Environment (CfE). Effective Feb. 24,. Bain succeeds Acting Director Max Pfeffer, professor of rural sociology, who was named associate director of the Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station in 2001. Announcing the appointment, Susan A. Henry, the Ronald P. Lynch Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, said: "Mark brings to the Center for the Environment a fresh perspective on the integration of research, education and outreach that our college endorses and values. His extensive knowledge of environmental policies and issues are essential for the promotion of a sustainable relationship between the environment and a quality life for people here and around the world." Twenty-eight teen-agers associated with the New York City agency Boys Harbor will attend Cornell's Summer College, from June 22 to Aug. 6, on scholarship support from an anonymous donor. Six students from Central Park East High School and University Heights (Bronx) High School in New York also are coming to Summer College with scholarship support from the Uris Foundation.
Cornell's alumni body recently elected Judith C. Areen and Samuel C. Fleming to four-year terms on the Cornell Board of Trustees. They succeed Eleanor S. Applewhaite and J. Thomas Clark on the board effective July 1. Applewhaite and Clark are completing four-year terms as alumni elected trustees.
