Avoid sick or dead birds: Cornell expert on avian influenza

Krysten Schuler, assistant professor in public and ecosystem health, is available to explain what kinds of wild birds and mammals are affected. Schuler says while there is not currently a significant risk for humans, it’s best not to handle sick or dead birds and keep them away from pets.

Fatal deer disease on NY’s doorstep as PA reports case

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture recently announced a white-tailed deer in northwestern Pennsylvania, only five miles from the New York border, tested positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD). Krysten Schuler, wildlife disease ecologist and one of the top researchers regarding CWD, says this positive CWD case will require a thorough investigation to make sure it did not infect wild deer in New York.

Tracing a lethal legacy: Lead poisoning in NYS bald eagles

Dr. Krysten Schuler, wildlife disease ecologist with the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine’s New York State Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC), explains how the New York State Wildlife Health Program – a partnership between AHDC and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation that examines wildlife mortalities – recently discovered that out of 300 bald eagles tested in New York state, 17 percent had lead levels high enough to cause death from lead poisoning.
