July’s jobs report to map industries’ recovery, recession

On Friday, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics will release figures for unemployment in the month of July. Erica Groshen is a senior labor economics advisor at the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations. She is a former commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and has written extensively on how economies can recover from recessions.

IPO to bolster Lyft’s position, provide exit path for investors

While the holiday traditionally attracts a core of committed fans, many are also peer-pressured to jump into the festivity’s spending.  Ori Heffetz, professor of applied economics at Cornell University’s SC Johnson College of Business, is an expert on consumption and studies the psychological, social and cultural aspects of economic behavior. Heffetz says that when it comes to celebrations, Halloween has become the holiday to show off one’s status.

Arrogance, poor judgement at core of Ghosn’s misconduct

November 19, 2018

On Monday, Japanese carmaker Nissan announced that it was firing its chairman, Carlos Ghosn after authorities had arrested him for alleged financial misconduct. Ghosn is accused of having under-reported over $44 million in pay and of having diverted company funds for personal use. Arthur Wheaton, a car industry expert at Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations, says that Ghosn’s case is an – unsurprising – example of corporate greed.

By cutting workforce, Audi bets on new trends, upscale customers

This week, Audi announced it would cut up to 9,500 jobs, roughly one in ten of its total staff, to focus more efforts and funding toward electric vehicle production. The company has also announced that it will add 2,000 positions in the areas of electric mobility and digitalization.  Thomas Jungbauer, professor of economics in the SC Johnson College of Business at Cornell University, studies tech firms and high-skilled labor markets. He says that by changing its work force, Audi is attempting to create a competitive advantage within a highly disrupted industry.

Government faces hard task of scaling small business relief

The government’s $2 trillion stimulus package includes more than $350 billion in loans and payroll tax relief destined to help small and medium firms, those who are self-employed as well as freelancers and gig workers. Tom Schryver, visiting lecturer at the SC Johnson College of Business at Cornell University, says that in helping small businesses, the government is walking a line between getting things done fast and offering the perfect solutions.
