As pollution skyrockets in India, health care costs poised to mount

Levels of pollution in India’s capital New Delhi soared on Tuesday, leading the Indian Medical Association to declare a public health emergency and prompting officials to close schools. The smog descending over the city can cause sickness and pre-mature death, and can lead to billions of dollars of additional health care costs according to a Cornell University environmental economist.

A planet unsuitable for wildlife is a planet unfit for people

Global wildlife population declined sixty percent over the past four decades, according to the Living Planet Report 2018, released this week by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Amanda Rodewald says the report should be considered as a warning for people to change habits before making our planet unsuitable for people, too. Steven Osofsky says while using nature’s resources at a rapid rate may help global societies flourish now, we face significant negative impacts over time.

Chicago Climate Charter shows ‘bold leadership’ for American workers

December 5, 2017

Dozens of mayors from across North America, including at least 36 U.S. cities are expected to sign an agreement on Tuesday to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet the commitments laid out on a global scale in the Paris Climate Accord. The Chicago Climate Charter, to be signed at the North American Climate Summit in Chicago, signals an important step towards reducing emissions and creating jobs of the future, according to sustainability researchers at Cornell University.
