The period of Jan. 1 through Sept. 30 was the wettest for the Northeast in 102 years of records, according to climatologists from the Northeast Regional Climate Center at Cornell University.

Two years ago a 14-year-old boy in Genoa, N.Y., stood atop a mound of corn while unloading a tractor-trailer on the family farm. Suddenly the truck's unloading trough opened and he was engulfed by grain, and sank as if in quicksand. John Ducey, chief of the Genoa Fire Department, recalls that the boy "had swallowed and breathed in corn" and it appeared that "his time was about done."
"Labor and Election-Year Politics" is the title and theme of this year's Union Days at Cornell University's School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR), April 13-16. Most events are free and open to the public. "The annual Union Days program is designed to raise awareness among students and others about the struggles of working people to better their lives and their communities," said Jefferson Cowie, assistant professor of collective bargaining, labor law and labor history at the ILR School and the event's organizer. "This year the focus will be on the central role that labor plays in electoral politics, making the week's events of interest to anyone concerned with justice in the workplace or the fate of the 2004 presidential elections." As cool as it seemed, temperatures around the Northeast in August averaged close to the monthly normal, said Keith Eggleston, regional climatologist with the Northeast Regional Climate Center at Cornell. The regional average temperature was just 0.2 degrees warmer than normal.
Toss another log on the Yankee fire. This was the coldest January for Bridgeport, Conn., and Boston in a half century, according to the Northeast Regional Climate Center at Cornell.
According to a new study by Cornell University food scientists, led by Rui Hai Liu, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of food science, shallots, Western Yellow, pungent yellow and Northern Red onions are higher in anti-cancer chemicals than other varieties tested. (Oct. 7, 2004)
