The Cornell Institute for Translational Research on Aging (CITRA) is funded with $1.9 million from the National Institute of Aging (NIA), one of four Edward R. Roybal Centers funded nationwide this year. A collaboration of the fields of social science, clinical research and mental health, the institute embraces social scientists from Cornell's Ithaca campus, research clinicians in geriatric medicine at the Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University in Manhattan, and researchers at the Psychiatric Division of the Cornell Institute for Geriatric Psychiatry in Westchester County, N.Y. A new study published online in Environmental Health Perspectives suggests that interactions between gut ecology and environmental chemicals may contribute to obesity and diabetes.
So that future generations can enjoy New York's forests for the trees, Cornell University's Department of Natural Resources has received a $179,204 grant from the U.S. Forest Service to teach sustainable land stewardship to the state's small-forest owners. Cornell's Forestry Extension program will coordinate its program activities with the Division of Lands and Forests, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The money for the first year is contained in the Forest Land Enhancement Program (FLEP) in the federal 2002 Farm Bill, which appropriated $100 million, $645,000 of which went to New York. Kelvin Lee, associate professor in the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Cornell University, is the new director of Cornell's Institute for Biotechnology and Life Sciences Technologies. The institute promotes research, education and technology transfer to benefit the Life Sciences industries, including agriculture and medicine.
Peter M. Salino, operations manager in the Grounds Department within the Facilities Services unit of Cornell, is the new director of that department, succeeding Dennis Osika, who has retired. (Jan. 21, 2009)
