National community-service education and empowerment group will have its regional meeting at Cornell, Nov. 6-8
By Jermaine Cruz
As part of the Campus Outreach Opportunity League's (COOL) goal to have a greater presence on campuses nationwide, the organization has announced its 1998 Northeast Regional Meeting will take place at Cornell University, Nov. 6-8.
Founded in 1984, COOL is a national, non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C., dedicated to the education and empowerment of college students for community-service efforts. Through its programs, such as Into the Streets, it helps students and communities develop student-run, inclusive, high-quality service programs.
The regional meeting will focus on network building and leadership skill development. Participants will attend workshops and participate in discussions that will provide them with skills, knowledge and insight into programs and issues that relate to service in the Northeast.
Workshops will highlight new techniques as well as leadership and organizational skills. Participants will learn from each other as they discuss challenges and solutions in small groups.
Participants also will be going "Into the Streets" in Ithaca on Friday, Nov. 6, in a one-day service project based on COOL's highly successful national program of the same name. Participants will be teamed with local community organizations to perform direct service.
"Regional meetings are a great opportunity for those who are having their first exposure to COOL, those who want to increase their leadership skills and those who love service," said Heather Tritten, regional meeting director at COOL. "Regionals are a great way for students and higher education institutions to stay connected to the student service movement, to each other and to COOL." Tritten said.
