ITHACA, N.Y. -- Counselors at Cornell University are offering special services to groups and individual students following the death of a sophomore student Tuesday, Oct. 15.
Scott J. Paavola, 19, a student in the College of Engineering and a member of the men's swim team, died unexpectedly at 525 Stewart Ave., the house of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, where he was a member. Cornell Police and the Ithaca Police Department conducted a joint investigation. The Ithaca Police Department issued a news release Oct. 16 stating, "A forensic post mortem examination conducted at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton has found ... Scott Paavola's cause of death to be a medical condition associated with an enlarged heart."
Susan H. Murphy, vice president for student and academic services, said, "The Cornell community mourns the loss of Scott Paavola. During his time with us, he touched many people on campus and made a real impact, especially through the swim team and his fraternity. In this sad time, we will come together to support one another and especially his family, friends and the many students who are touched by this tragedy."
The office of student support in the Dean of Students Office is arranging and leading community support groups in the engineering college, the fraternity and men's and women's swimming teams.
Individual students who need support can go to Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at Gannett: Cornell University Health Services. If students say they were affected by the death, counselors will make a special effort to help them quickly.
CAPS can be reached at (607) 255-5208 during the day and (607) 255-5155 during evening and weekend hours. The student support office can be reached at 255-3608 during office hours and through the campus police 24 hours per day at (607) 255-1111.
A memorial service is being planned through Cornell United Religious Work.
